all i ask

The clock ticks 

and hours pass 

forever progressing forward 

to an end that no one could ever know 

The hand of the clock 

Will spin as long as the Earth does 

Only pausing when your heart stops 

And time ceases to exist 

Like trying to harness the wind 

In hands that cannot even hold 

The weight of a love 

That could never be returned 

The existence of time  

Was a force I could not reckon with 

So, the promise of eternal love 

Stopped the spin of this Earth 

And for a moment 

it was enough 

So, I took your love 

And kept it in my pocket 

Like you would an extra movie ticket 

To save for a rainy day 

Only to take it out months later, 

And see the date had long passed 

Certainly, love was shattered like glass 

Glass that encased the unforgiving advance of time 

But I pulled away 

Before the shards could cut me 

All that I ask 

Is just a few more heartbeats 

A few more breaths on this Earth 

So that one day 

I can make up for the time I stole from you 

Because I took too long to say 

I never loved you the same 

I was busy staring at the clock 

Praying for time to stop
